SOCIO-ECONOMIC IMPACT ASSESSMENT AND SOLUTIONS

Natural resources use can lead to both benefits and impacts for human societies. In Africa it is clear that countries blessed with natural resources have not yet been able to benefit from perceived mining booms. Some even talked about “Resource Curse” or the perception that countries rich in mineral are subject to war, corruption, violent crimes and poverty.

INAREC proposes to work with host communities and mining companies in a win-win platform by developing procedures that will foster effective identification, quantification and evaluation of the potential socio-economic and cultural impacts on the lives and circumstances of the people and their communities.

Customized solutions and alternative practices that benefit both communities’ socio-economic status and companies’ in a sustainable platform, can be implemented and taken into account at every stage of the projects

In order to accomplish its main goals, INAREC works with local community leaders and NGOs such “Sauvons demain”, one of our main “on the ground” partner, in order to collect the maximum data pool of significant/relevant socio-economic indicators post and pre mining activities.

So what are the main goals at INAREC for this sector?

INAREC wants to transform every mining/natural resources project into an economic Pole beneficial for the country, the company and communities

  • Contribution  to social – economic infrastructural development within the area where the mine is located
  • Creation of employment opportunities both direct in the mines and indirectly on services to the mines
  • Improvement of human capital through provision of education and health services with focus being put on local communities
  • Improvement of infrastructure like roads and water supply
  • Creation of other economic activities to support the mine instead of importing all supplies from abroad
  • Preparation of the end of mine life in order to guarantee some level of sustainability.
  • Building a mining town that is sustainable
